Count lunar month four from Da An

Month one is Da An, two Liu Lian, three Su Xi and four Chi Kou.

Count twelve days from Chi Kou

Treat Chi Kou as day one and count through the six-position cycle to Su Xi.

Count from Su Xi to Shen hour

Count Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei and Shen to finish at Xiao Ji.

Check the result with the formula

Month four is 4, day twelve is 12 and Shen is the ninth traditional hour:

(4 + 12 + 9 - 3) mod 6 = 4

Index 4 is Xiao Ji when Da An is index 0, matching the finger-counting steps.
